Ganesh Chaturthi 2020 Date in India Calendar

For the year 2020, Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on Saturday, 22nd August.

Why do we Celebrate Ganesh Festival?

One of the major festivals celebrated in India is Ganesh Chaturthi. The birth of Lord Ganesh is celebrated on this day. Lord Ganesh is considered as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, wealth, prosperity and good fortune in Hinduism. This festival is also called as Vinayak Chaturthi. In mythology, it is said that on this day, at the request of Gods, Ganesh was created as the son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva to destroy the demons. Thus, we celebrate the birth of Lord Ganesh as Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganesh Festival.

What is the Story of Ganesh Chaturthi?

Many types of stories are told about the birth of Lord Ganesh. The most prevalent legend is that Lord Ganesh was created by Goddess Parvati out of dirt from her body to guard her in the absence of Lord Shiva. Once Lord Shiva went out somewhere, in his absence Goddess Parvati applied ubatan (body scrub) on her body. Then, with the same ubatan of her body, she made an idol that created Bal Ganesh. After this, Goddess Parvati went for a bath and asked Bal Ganesh to guard her door. Bal Ganesh started guarding the door when Lord Shiva came. When he tried to go inside, Bal Ganesh stopped him. Lord Shiva got angry, he separated Ganesh's head from the body. By then Goddess Parvati came out. She was enraged at seeing the severed head of her son. She took the form of Kali. Lord Shiva apologized after hearing the whole things and found a solution to bring Ganesh alive. The devas were sent to search for a child's head facing north but they could only find an elephant's head. Lord Shiva attached that head to Ganesh's body. Thus, Bal Ganesh was alive again and Goddess Parvati felt happy. Since then, this day is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi.

Lord Ganesh is worshipped in Ganesh Chaturthi. All the devotees celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi set-up an idol of Lord Ganesh on this day and immerse the idol of Lord Ganesh on the 11th day i.e. on Anant Chaturdarshi and thus the Ganesh Utsava is concluded.

Why Ganesh is Worshipped first?

At the beginning of the creation, when the question arose as to who should be considered as the first worshipper, then all the Gods reached Lord Shiva, then Shiva told them, the first one who will revolve around the entire earth will be considered as the first worshipper. Hearing this, all the Gods started sitting in their vahana (vehicles) to revolve around the earth.

Since Rat is the vehicle of Lord Ganesh and his body is also bulky, so how could Lord Ganesh manage to revolve around the entire earth, then Lord Ganesh with his wisdom and cleverness completed the three revolutions of his father Lord Shiva and mother Parvati and stood with folded hands.

Then Lord Shiva said that there is no one greater and wiser than you in this whole world. By doing three revolutions of mother and father, you have completed the revolution of the three regions and you have got its merit which is bigger than the revolutions of the earth.

Therefore, a person who will worship you before starting any work will not have to face any kind of difficulties.

Since then Lord Ganesh became the first worshipper and hence after worshipping Lord Ganesh all other Gods and Goddesses are worshiped.

Why Ganesh Chaturthi is Celebrated for 10 Days?

According to religious texts, when Ved Vyas had narrated the story of Mahabharata to Lord Ganesh for ten days, then he closed his eyes and when he opened his eyes after ten days, he found that Lord Ganesh's temperature was very high.

Then at the same time Ved Vyas had given a bath to Lord Ganesh in the nearby Kund, which reduced his body temperature. Thus, Lord Ganesh is worshipped for the next ten days after the establishment of Ganpati and then on the eleventh day the statue of Lord Ganesh is immersed.

Ganesh Visarjan is also a symbol of the fact that this body is made up of clay and finally it has to be mixed in the soil.

Who started Ganesh festival and for what purpose?

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi has been celebrated for many years. It is believed that Ganesh Chaturthi was first celebrated by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Maratha region, but before 1893 it was confined to the houses only. At that time, the celebration was not done on such a large scale in pandals as it is done today.

In 1893, Bal Gangadhar Tilak was fighting for freedom and to mobilize the people against the British, he needed a platform through which his voice could reach the maximum number of people and then he chose the Ganapati festival and organized this festival on a large scale in which a large number of people participated and thus Ganesh Chaturthi started being celebrated in the whole nation.

Since Bal Gangadhar Tilak organized this event in Maharashtra, that is why even today, this festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over Maharashtra. In this festival, there is a festive atmosphere in every house in the state of Maharashtra. The image of the grand appearance that Tilak gave to this festival is seen throughout Maharashtra till date.
